These awards allow members of all ability levels to become patrolling lifesavers. Some members can elect to use these awards to further their careers within Surf Life Saving.

Surf Rescue Certificate

The SRC is the introductory award for patrolling surf lifesavers and allows the recipient to take part in beach patrols. Completion of this award is a minimum requirement for participation in surf sports competition as an Under 15 (and in some instances as an Under 14). This course is aimed at members wanting to participate on patrol or as water safety personnel for Surf Sports or Junior Activities. The SRC is a stepping stone towards a Bronze Medallion, with less demanding assessment tasks. The aim of the course is to develop basic skills about surf awareness, first aid, rescue, CPR and patrols.

What qualifications or pre-requisites do I need?

In order to complete your SRC you must be 13 years or older at the time of assessment. You will also need to complete a 200m pool swim in less than 5 minutes.

Bronze Medallion

Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)

The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.The aim of the Bronze Medallion course is to develop your skills and knowledge to perform the role of a patrolling lifesaver on the beach. You will develop skills and knowledge to select appropriate equipment (tube, board, AED, radios) when responding to an aquatic rescue or during routine patrol duties.

What qualifications or pre-requisites do I need?

In order to complete your Bronze Medallion you must be 15 years or older at the time of assessment. You will also need to complete a 400m pool swim in less than 9 minutes.

Silver Medallion Beach Management

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and experience required to manage a beach and a team in emergency and non-emergency situations. The course is aimed at people wishing to be Patrol Captains, Lifeguards and Lifeguard Supervisors.  It is an extension of basic principles learnt in the Bronze Medallion course and equips members to be an entry level beach manager and team leader.

What qualifications or pre-requisites do I need?

In order to complete your Silver Medallion you must be 17 years or older at the time of assessment and hold a current Bronze Medallion (Certificate II in Public Safety – Aquatic Rescue). You will also need to be proficient in one of the following awards: Apply (senior) First Aid/First Aid [AID], Radio Operator Certificate or Advanced Resuscitation Techniques [AID].

These awards are the same as those offered by other training organisations (eg. QLD Ambulance, St John’s, etc). They are offered as stand alone courses and are included in other training (eg. Bronze Medallion).

First Aid

This course is developed to meet the identified needs for a member wishing to extend their knowledge of providing first aid.

What qualifications or pre-requisites do I need?

In order to complete your First Aid Certificate you must be at least 14 years of age at the date of assessment.

Advanced Resuscitation Techniques

HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation techniques

The aim of this course is to develop skills in using AEDs, suction, airway management equipment, oxygen during resuscitation and to administer oxygen to a conscious or unconscious patient.

What qualifications or pre-requisites do I need?

In order to complete your Advanced Resuscitation Techniques course, you must be at least 15 years of age at the date of assessment and proficient in at least one of the following awards: Bronze Medallion, Apply (Senior) First Aid/First Aid (AID), Resuscitation Certificate.

Since its inclusion into Surf Life Saving in the 1970s,the Inflatable Rescue Boat has become an integral piece of lifesaving equipment. The main focus of these awards is the safe operation of the IRB in the surf zone.

IRB Crewman Certificate

The aim of this course is to help you develop skills and knowledge to effectively participate as crew in rescues using an IRB. Inflatable rescue boats are used for surveillance, quick rescue response, search and rescue and water safety during competitions. IRB racing is also a popular discipline in Surf Sports.

What qualifications or pre-requisites do I need?

In order to complete your IRB Crewman Certificate you must be at least 15 years of age at the date of assessment and have a proficient Bronze Medallion.

Silver Medallion – IRB Driver

The aim of this course is to help you develop knowledge and skills to safely and effectively drive an Inflatable Rescue Boat. The IRB Driver is responsible for safely operating the IRB in the surf zone and managing the IRB Crew.

What qualifications or pre-requisites do I need?

In order to complete your IRB Driver Certification you must be at least 17 years of age at the date of assessment and hold a QLD Recreational Marine Licence (this is not offered by Surf Life Saving and must be acquired elsewhere prior to commencing this course). You must also be a proficient Bronze Medallion holder and proficient IRB Crewman.
